DMS Curriculum Intent, Implementation and Impact Overview

Intent

We believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. Our geography curriculum enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas. It should promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Implementation

At Dedworth Middle School, we work closely with other schools in the Windsor Schools Learning Partnership to create a balanced curriculum that prepares pupils for their next stage of education and is planned to demonstrate progression.

In geography we implement our curriculum through a variety of teaching approaches as well as a wide variety of learning and teaching resources.

In KS2, children are taught geography through a range of topic based projects. By KS3, their geographical journey is enhanced and developed further with an increase in timetabled lessons.

Impact

We want them to take an interest in what is happening to the world we live in and to ask questions about what we can do to help. We will aim to increase children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments as well as develop an understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. The curriculum is designed to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable, throughout their time here and beyond.
