Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader: Parents Guide

At Dedworth, we use Accelerated Reader (AR) to ensure we manage and monitor pupils’ independent reading practice in Year 5 to Year 8.

How does Accelerated Reader work?
Our pupils select a book at their own level and reads it at their own pace. When they have finished, our pupils take a short quiz on the computer - passing the quiz is an indication that each pupil has understood what was read.

Pupils using AR must choose their own books, rather than having one assigned to them. Pupils can also take quizzes on books that have been read to them, e.g. by parents and tutors. Pupils have access to a wide variety of books in the school library.

How much should each pupil read during the school day?
Our school expectations are for our pupils to read at least 20 minutes a day in school during either morning and/or afternoon Aspire time and 20 minutes a day at home.

How does the school determine each pupil’s reading level?
The pupils take a STAR Reading test four times a year which generates a book level (ZPD) based on their reading age and comprehension abilities. The test uses multiple-choice questions and takes approximately 20-30 minutes.

How do I know my child’s reading level?
The child’s book level (ZPD) is the range of books that will challenge a pupil without causing frustration or loss of motivation. Each pupil will receive a book level range which is recorded in their homework diary.

How will I know if a book has an AR quiz?
Each pupil may visit the AR BookFinder at to search all available books with AR quizzes. All books in the school library with book levels on their spines, will have a quiz on AR.

Accelerated Reader Competition

We have launched an exciting new reading competition. The children have been reading away in order to take quizzes on Accelerated Reader. Prizes are awarded for every 10, 25, 50 and 60 quizzes successfully completed! You can see the prizes in the picture below.

As well as this, the children also have the opportunity to win an Amazon Kindle Bundle which includes the Kindle device, a case and a charger. There is one Kindle up-for-grabs per year group for the child who passes the most quizzes. There is also an additional 5th Kindle which will be awarded to the child in the school who reads the most words. The Kindles will be awarded in the end of year assembly in July!
