PE and Sport Premium
Swimming Provision
The school uses PE and Sport Premium funding to support swimming provision for pupils who have not yet met the national curriculum requirement for swimming and water safety.
Provision is targeted at pupils who are not yet able to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres and/or meet the required water safety outcomes.
Due to limited access to local swimming facilities, the school commissions an onsite heated swimming pool provider, delivered annually as a 4–6 week intensive programme. During this period, identified pupils receive daily intensive swimming lessons, designed to accelerate progress and secure statutory outcomes.
PE and Sport Premium funding is used to:
Commission onsite swimming pool provision and qualified instructors
Provide daily intensive swimming lessons during the 4–6 week programme
Target pupils who have not yet met the national curriculum requirement
Ensure sufficient repetition and practice to secure rapid progress
Address barriers caused by limited access to local swimming pools
Impact of Funding
The use of PE and Sport Premium funding for swimming has had a clear impact on pupil outcomes.
At the end of Key Stage 2:
59% of pupils can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
29% of pupils can use a range of strokes effectively (e.g. front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke)
54% of pupils can perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
Pupils who require additional support make accelerated progress through daily targeted sessions and the intensive onsite programme. Pupils demonstrate improved water confidence, stroke technique, and stamina following intervention.
Disadvantaged pupils and those at risk of not meeting expectations are prioritised for additional provision, ensuring gaps in attainment are addressed effectively.
Sustainability of provision
The school will continue to prioritise PE and Sport Premium funding to sustain this model of provision. Given ongoing limitations in access to local swimming pools, the school will maintain:
Annual delivery of a 4–6 week onsite intensive swimming programme
Daily swimming sessions for pupils who have not yet met the expected standard
Regular assessment and tracking of pupil progress to inform targeted intervention
Delivery by qualified swimming instructors to ensure structured progression
This approach ensures equitable access to statutory swimming provision and supports pupils to meet national curriculum expectations by the end of Key Stage 2.
